Ethics knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of tertiary care pediatricians in Ethiopia.John D. Lantos & Atnafu Mekonnen Tekleab - 2022 - BMC Medical Ethics 23 (1):1-6.
BackgroundPediatricians in developing countries face different ethical dilemmas than do doctors working in settings with more resources. There are very few studies from developing countries analyzing pediatricians’ knowledge and attitudes regarding the ethical dilemmas that arise in such settings. To address this gap, we explored the clinical ethical knowledge, attitude and experience of physicians who are working in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health of St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.Study populationAll pediatric resident doctors and pediatric (...)

Translating Corporate Social Responsibility into Action: A Social Learning Perspective.Amanuel G. Tekleab, Paul M. Reagan, Boram Do, Ariel Levi & Cary Lichtman - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 171 (4):741-756.
Interest in the microfoundations of corporate social responsibility has grown over the past decade. In this study, we draw on social learning theory to examine the effects of prosocial leaders on followers’ motivation to engage in CSR practices, and consequently on their CSR performance. Further drawing from social learning theory, we propose that followers’ trait compliance and leader-member exchange moderate the above relationships by affecting the conceptual mechanisms of social rewards and role-modeling motives. We tested our hypotheses with data from (...)

Organ Trafficking in Africa: Pragmatist Ethical Reconsiderations.Belayneh Taye, Abayneh Atnafu, Yihenew Wubu Endalew & Sisay Demissew Beyene - 2023 - Contemporary Pragmatism 20 (3):169-195.
This article focuses on examining the situation of organ trafficking in Africa from the aspect of pragmatist ethics. In the mainstream thought, the broader ethical dilemma of organ trafficking is viewed within the moral contestation of altruism as a rule for organ procurement and the resulting worldwide organ shortage. The incapability of altruistic transplant orthodoxy to serve as an applicable foundation for a public policy is considered as a reason for organ trafficking. In fact, to battle organ trafficking, utilitarian-inclined studies (...)

What Space for Female Subjectivity in the Post-Secular?Mats Nilsson & Mekonnen Tesfahuney - 2019 - Theory, Culture and Society 36 (7-8):173-192.
This article heeds previous calls for revitalized feminist accounts of gender and religion. Having identified post-secular female pilgrimages as practices that actuate a ‘third space’, we claim that it is a space that cannot be adequately theorized from within secular feminist perspectives and attendant conceptions of subjectivity, agency and autonomy. Nor do perspectives from religious studies and its conceptions of piety as expressions of subjectivity, agency and autonomy do justice to the spatialities and subjectivities of post-secular female pilgrims. The article (...)

Kinship, Justice, and Inheritance: The Case of ‘Rest’ in Ethiopia.Kebadu Mekonnen Gebremariam - 2023 - Law and Philosophy 42 (1):37-55.
This paper argues that the inheritance of wealth must be grounded on reasons other than the defense of the testator’s right to bequeath or that of an heir’s alleged moral right to receive inheritance. It asserts that the accepted approach in anglophone political philosophy about the justice of inheritance along the framework of ‘justice in transfer’ is misguided. Taking _Rest_ land inheritance in Ethiopia as a case study, it defends a system of corporate ownership of land by the descent group (...)

Enhancing the ethical conduct of a longitudinal cluster-randomized trial of psychosocial stimulation intervention for children with complicated severe acute malnutrition through Rapid Ethical Assessment: a qualitative study.Tesfalem T. Tessema, Andamlak G. Alamdo, Eyoel B. Mekonnen, Fanna A. Debele, Juhar A. Bamud, Teklu G. Abessa & Tefera Belachew Lema - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-13.
Background Informed consent is a universally accepted precondition for scientific researches involving human participants. However, various factors influence the process of obtaining authentic informed consent, and researchers particularly working in resource-poor countries often face considerable difficulties in implementing the universally recommended procedures for obtaining informed consent. We have conducted this Rapid Ethical Assessment to accommodate the local cultural norms and to understand the relevant ethical issues in the Silti community before the conduct of a cluster-randomized controlled trial. Methods This REA (...)
